Generally speaking, I recommend that you do not take your chances and buy specially made octopus traps. What I personally use when catching cuttlefish is a clay pot, because it provides an innocent home for the cuttlefish to crawl into and live in. Sources: 0

However, it should be noted that octopuses are very sensitive to the shelter the pot provides, so this method can be used as bait. Sources: 0

However, the best results can be achieved by getting out of the boat and strategically placing several traps in a specific area. This can be achieved by strategically placing traps where they are placed. For example, you could put a fish trap on a rock where a pike likes to lie down, or even on the bottom of a creek. Sources: 0, 6

Since the fish remain relatively intact in the trap, it is not necessary to check the traps daily. The traps also allow for the release of undersized fish outside the fisheries regulations. In 2017, Atlantic cod pots were declared suitable for use by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Sources: 6

The fishermen explained that summer was a bad time to catch cuttlefish, so the researchers decided to return to Lower Cook Inlet in October. Sources: 4

They used custom-made plywood cuttlefish pots, and the number of traps rose to 250, with a total of more than 1,000 cuttings and octopuses caught. Octopuses can be caught in unplanted pots when they seek shelter in caves, but they can also cause damage to the walls of the pots. Sources: 4

Every year, about 45,000 tons of cuttlefish are caught in Japan, and about half of them are caught in cuttlefish pots called takotsubo. Neatly stacked, they look like the remains of an Octo condominium abandoned by the residents. The pots are octopuses: they are attached to long ropes that fall into the water, where they eventually settle on the seabed. One of the most common methods of catching cuttlefish in the inland Seto Sea is the Anoctopus pot, known as “Takotubos.” Sources: 7

If you crawl into something like this, you will never leave your home again – or at least not for a long time if you haven’t done so yet. Sources: 7

Zinc spear is a must for people who want to use the above method with their bare hands. The important difference is that the rod will be blunt and not deadly, and the spear must be the exact opposite. Putting a rod into an octopus that pulls itself out of its hiding place is one of the most effective methods I have found and is my favourite method among all the spear methods used. Sources: 0

Since cuttlefish are such intelligent and tricky creatures, you need a spear to hold the octopus in place while it is held by the spear. It is forbidden to use a sharp, tapered instrument to disassemble an octopus, even with a zinc spear or other sharp object. Sources: 0, 3

Octopuses are sought after on their own, but are occasionally coveted as ethnic food. However, they are usually caught inadvertently in cod and fish traps and harvested without the specified species. The information provided indicates that every year 12 animals are caught in fisheries off the coast of South Africa and 8 die, although it is not clear whether they are crabs or cuttlefish. Sources: 1, 3

The Bryde whale population is locally limited and is unlikely to have been caught in fishing, but this research strongly encourages further research into the potential impact of fishing on this species and other species. Sources: 1

The moratorium will also give the ministry time to assess current stocks and update much-needed information to take this into account when issuing permits. Modise also stated that licenses are awarded to several fishing operators, but only one of these operators can obtain a licence to catch cuttlefish in False Bay due to the considerable financial investment required to purchase vessels and equipment. Mitigating factors for permit holders who continue to voluntarily install them in their authorization equipment. Sources: 1, 5

The octopus is voracious and eats everything from crabs, mussels and snails. Octopuses can be caught in traps, most of which have bait pockets to attract crustaceans. This includes adding connecting lines to prevent the lines from wrapping around the whale. Sources: 2, 5

The Bryde whale population is locally limited and is likely to be caught in the trap, but the opportunity only arises when a live meal has already been caught. The information provided indicates that this year 12 fish were caught off the coast of South Africa and 8 died, although it is not clear whether they were crabs or cuttlefish. Sources: 1, 2

The moratorium will also allow time for the ministry to assess current stocks and update much-needed information so that it can apply its wisdom when issuing permits. This research is strongly encouraged to promote understanding of the Bryde whale population and its impact on the marine environment. Sources: 1
