Imagine it’s the start of the summer and you along with your buddies have decided to go out and have a picnic. You make all those sandwiches at home to go and eat at your local park. You are completely optimistic and have checked the weather and also made sure that the park is open. Having everything checked go out to the park and find a nice spot to sit down and enjoy your picnic. As soon as you take out your homemade sandwich, you are greeted with a swarm of flies that appeared out of nowhere. You didn’t plan for this, neither does anyone plan for it and because of these flies, you beautiful and peaceful picnic gets ruined. That’s Why you need to learn how to make fly traps at home or anywhere and learn how to use them!

So what do you do to take care of flies? Is there a way to make fly traps? How to make a homemade fly trap?

How to make fly traps at home?

The best fly trap can be made with a simple plastic bottle. So, how to make a fly trap out of a bottle? Just follow these do it yourself steps:

  1. Things you’ll need:
  • Two-liter soda bottle
  • A knife
  • A marker
  1. Draw a line on your bottle, just below the bottle neck
  2. Cut the part where the line has been drawn
  3. Remove the cap from the bottleneck
  4. Remove the bottle neck and place it upside into the bottle
  5. Prepare a proper bait for the flies to fall for

What to use as bait?

There are multiple things to use as bait but flies are most commonly attracted to anything that has gone bad or has rotted away. Items in this category can range from a piece of meat to a decomposed piece of bread. Another thing that flies like a lot is sugar. Flies are instantly attracted to anything with high content of sugar. Sugar filled items can contain sweet drinks or sweet eatables like ice cream and candy.

How to use the trap?

Flies will do what flies usually do. What will happen is that these flies will smell the bait and come for it instantly like they usually do. They will navigate through the bottleneck into the water bottle. Once they are in the bottle, they get confused and won’t be able to navigate themselves out of the bottle. Just like when a fly enters your home, it can’t find its way out. Flies are bad at navigating when introduced to a new environment.

Another misconception people often make is that honey would attract flies more than any other food item. Although that is certainly not the case and studies have found that honey doesn’t attract flies even though it’s the purest form of sugar out there. Another study done by NCBI found that adult flies are more attracted to vinegar than honey itself. Yes, you heard that right, vinegar, out of all the foods that you could use to make a fly trap, vinegar is one of them. Now the trap suggested above can be used with vinegar. What most people do with bottle traps is that they place water in them which drowns the flies once caught in it. Others put foods that act as bait. The best foods for these traps have been mentioned above. Surprisingly vinegar can be used too for bait in these traps.

After bottle traps, the next big thing to use for traps is jars. Jar traps can be as beneficial as the simple and ordinary bottle trap. So how to make a Jar Trap? The first step is to get a jar, no specific size matters. It can be a simple jam jar as far as it isn’t broken and is clean. The next step is to attach something to the jar so that it can be hung on a wall. You can put a simple rubber band around the jar lid or even use a small piece of string or rope. Make sure that you tightly secure the jar with which ever material you are using. Keep the jar open, don’t place the lid on it. Now if the top of the jar is opened, how will the flies stay in the trap? We will use a piece of plastic sheet, often found in the kitchen. That plastic sheet would be held in place by a rubber band so that it won’t get off the jar and let the flies escape. The next thing you would need to do is make small holes in the plastic sheets so that flies can come in for the bait. The best thing to use as bait would be vinegar if you are dealing with adult flies and if you are dealing with normal flies you can use the above mentioned items.

So to be exact, there are two types of fly traps that you can make at home. One being the bottle trap and the other being the jar trap. Both are effective and cost about nothing to make. All the supplies used in the construction of these traps can be found in every kitchen. Mostly what happens is that these items are thrown away and disposed of, it is better to make use of them. In the end, all these traps are super easy to make and super easy to implement. Plus their practicality and reusability are what make them so favorable by the vast majority of the population. Always use precaution while handling such traps and be responsible while cleaning them.
